How to Extend Your F-1 or J-1 Status
It is critical that you begin the process for requesting an extension well in advance, to ensure you have the supporting documentation needed from your host department or school, and the Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 with extension recommendation from OVIS, in order to submit the application so that it is received before your current program end date.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you timely file your extension application with USCIS.
Steps for Seeking an Extension of Status:
F-1
- Gather documentation in support of F-1 program extension request
- Student submits F-1 program extension request to OVIS in iDartmouth
- Designated second approver (either the academic advisor or PI) reviews and approves request
- OVIS reviews submission and issues updated Form I-20 with extension recommendation
- Student prints, signs and dates Form I-20
- Student submits Form I-20 with Form I-539 application for extension with USCIS prior to the expiration of the I-94 record of arrival
J-1
- Work with host school/department to gather documentation in support of J-1 program extension request
- Host school/department submits J-1 program extension request in iDartmouth
- OVIS reviews submission and issues updated Form DS-2019 with extension recommendation
- Exchange Visitor prints, signs and dates Form DS-2019
- Exchange Visitor submits Form DS-2019 with Form I-539 application for extension with USCIS for receipt prior to the expiration of the I-94 record of arrival
