Dependents of J-1 Scholars and Faculty
In order to bring dependents to the U.S., the J-1 exchange visitor must show evidence of financial resources sufficient to support their spouse and/or children. J-1 exchange visitors must show a bank account with at least $5,000 US for a spouse and $3,500 US for each child who will come to the United States.
Studying in the U.S.
- J-2 dependent spouses may engage in part-time or full-time study. A J-2 may accept financial support in exchange for work or an assistantship, but only after applying for and receiving an employment authorization card from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If a dependent is accepted into a full-time program of study, OVIS strongly recommends applying for a change of status to an appropriate student visa such as F-1.
- J-2 children may attend elementary and secondary school.
