Academic Training

Overview

Academic Training offers employment to supplement the student’s academic program in the United States. It is available before and after completion of study. Within specific time limits, Academic Training allows part-time work (20 hours or fewer) while classes are in session and full-time work during vacation periods and after the program end date.

Academic Training requires prior approval in writing from the OVIS J-1 Responsible Officer or Alternate Responsible Officer. OVIS will evaluate the proposed employment in terms of the student’s program of study.

As a J-1 student, you are eligible for a variety of work opportunities in the U.S., but employment without proper authorization is a serious violation of your status. Remember that before you start any kind of employment, you must first consult with OVIS and receive written approval in advance.

To start the process, go to iDartmouth and select the J-1 Academic Training form.
