U.S. Customs & Border Protection Conducts Random Immigration Inspections at Bus Terminals and Highway Checkpoints

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) has reinstituted its practice of transportation checks at public bus terminals, including the terminals in Burlington and White River Junction, VT. During these checks, CBP Officers board the bus and ask each passenger to present their documents evidencing lawful status in the U.S.

CBP has also begun conducting transportation checks on major highways, including I-91 and I-89. It has been several years since CBP has engaged in these traffic stops. From August 25-27, 2017, CBP conducted checks on I-93 in the Lincoln, NH area. OVIS will continue to monitor these activities and update our website and Facebook pages.

CBP claims authority to operate these checks within 100 miles of the U.S. Canadian border. Non-U.S. citizens who travel within the 100-mile border zone should carry appropriate documents verifying lawful status in the U.S. Nonimmigrants (F-1, J-1, H-1B, etc.) and Lawful Permanent Residents should carry passports and evidence of valid entry to the U.S. at all times (I-94 record for nonimmigrants, and green card for permanent residents).

If you have questions about CBP inspections, please contact your OVIS advisor.
