Funding

Overview

All J-1 Exchange Visitors and their accompanying J-2 dependent family members must have sufficient funding to cover the duration of the J-1 program at Dartmouth. Minimum monthly funding requirements are based on the cost of living budget set by the School of Graduate and Advanced Studies for international graduate students. These requirements do not include the cost of travel or insurance. Effective October 1, 2022.

  • J-1 Exchange Visitor - $2,900/month, $34,800/year
     
  • J-2 Dependent Spouse - $417/month, $5,000/year
     
  • J-2 Dependent Child - $292/month, $3,500/year, per child

Acceptable Funding Sources and Documentation

For paid appointments, the appointment letter from Dartmouth College is sufficient funding evidence. For unpaid appointments, Exchange Visitors must provide evidence of sufficient funding from:

Program Sponsor Funds

  • Source: Dartmouth stipend or honorarium
  • Evidence: Appointment letter

Other Organization Funds

  • Source: Home university salary or paid sabbatical leave
  • Evidence: Letter from home university

Other Organization Funds

  • Source: Fellowship or scholarship
  • Evidence: letter from organization providing fellowship or scholarship

Personal Funds

  • Source: Personal, family
  • Evidence: Most recent bank account statement or current bank letter. If family member, written statement confirming relationship to Exchange Visitor and that funds are available for Exchange Program, plus bank statement

All funding evidence must be in English.
