Eligibility

Overview

The U.S. Department of State allows students who are enrolled in degree programs at home universities (in other countries) to come to the U.S. in the student intern J-1 category, for a maximum period of 12 months. The internship may be paid or unpaid, but the student must provide evidence of personal or external funding sufficient to cover all travel, health insurance, and living expenses, for the duration of the internship.

To be eligible for sponsorship as a J-1 student intern at Dartmouth, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the United States.

  • Demonstrate that the internship will fulfill the educational objectives for your current degree program at your home institution.

  • Seek to enter the U.S. to engage primarily in a student internship program, rather than to engage in employment or provide services to an employer.

  • Be in good academic standing with the post-secondary academic institution at which you are currently enrolled.

  • Possess English language ability sufficient to function on day-to-day basis in the internship environment.

  • Have sufficient health insurance coverage to meet U.S. Department of State minimum requirements.

  • Return to your prior academic studies following completion of the student internship program in the U.S., and fulfill your degree requirements.
